This site will look much better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device.
While you would never think of living your life without a front door to your house, you should think twice before you add one to your site. Many times, designers create complex and jazzy splash screens that do little more than wow the viewer. The thing the designer is forgetting is that the viewer is already at your site, and you should be able to wow them with what's behind the splash screen. Therefore, the splash screen does little else than such bandwidth and time.
Splash screens can nevertheless be functional if used correctly on the right kind of site. For instance, an art site might do well with a front door that sets the mood for the site. You might consider a splash screen if you have a compelling story that you want to be sure the viewer sees.
However, if you have an informational site, don't waste the time or space on vanity. Instead, use the page to get viewers started on their quest for knowledge by providing them with an index and search engine. The type of site that you are designing should also dictate whether you have a splash page. For example, if the viewer will possibly visit your site many times a day, you will want to steer clear of a splash screen.
