Help Visitors Find What They Are Looking For

[pdf version]

As content packed as your site may be, it is a known fact that more than 50 percent of the visitors to your site are looking for a single bit of information whether it be a phone number, recipe, or product.  Considering the child-like attention span of most visitors, you want to make sure they can find what they need.  The "three-click" rule of the Web says that most users should be able to find whatever they seek within three clicks of the mouse.  Otherwise, they will head to another site where they can find the information more quickly.  That is the reason your Web site should always include a search engine that is accessible from the home page.  Even with distinct and well-marked categories, having a search engine can make sure the viewer has the best chance of finding data quickly.
