Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter

[pdf version]

It is a good idea to periodically run the disk cleanup and disk defragmenter.  These utilities remove temporary files and improve the performance of the computer's hard drive.

  1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.
  2. Highlight the C:\ drive if prompted.
  3. A list of the folders with temporary files displays.  Review them and uncheck any folders with items that should not be deleted.  Usually, the default items can be accepted.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Disable the Windows screen saver.
    1. Right-click on the desktop.
    2. Click Properties on the shortcut menu.
    3. Click the Screen Saver tab.
    4. Click the Screen Saver down arrow and highlight None.
    5. Click OK.
  6. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.
  7. Click the Defragment button.
