Outlook 2003 blocks images that spammers use as Web beacons.  A Web beacon is a graphic image that links to an external Web server.  It verifies that an e-mail address is valid when the message is opened and pictures are downloaded.  See Figure 1.  Click image to enlarge it.  Pictures should be downloaded only from a reliable source.

Block Images Settings

  1. Click Tools > Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Change Automatic Download Settings button.  See Figure 2.
