Innovative Children's Nutrition Theatre Hits CasperChildren's Nutrition Theatre - Casper

Nutrition education took a creative turn at Roosevelt High School in Casper.  After completing the Cent$ible Nutrition Program lessons as part of their Foods Class, the students wanted to share their new knowledge.  "Cook-a-Doodle Healthy Snacks for You! was written and performed by the students for local elementary schools," said Ruth Petersen the Cent$ible Nutrition Program Coordinator in Natrona County.

"After learning about all the nutritious foods and how to eat more of them, we decided to write a play to teach little kids how to eat better," explained Cetera Moore, a student from last year's class.

The Roosevelt students made their own costumes, created backdrops, and prepared the snacks for the interactive play.  "It was really fun to do it for the kids and then answer their questions at the end," said Moore.

While the play was fun for both the actors and audience alike, the play also provided an opportunity for the students to collect data and chart impacts from pre- and post-tests given by the grade school teachers.

"This play has taken on a life of its own.  With a Team Nutrition mini-grant, we improved the costumes and the Foods class is continuing to update the play with MyPyramid information, " said Petersen.  "Aside from great nutrition messages being shared, this has been a great community experience for these kids.  They were even invited to perform at the Wyoming Department of Education Spring Conference."
