Located in the Aven Nelson Building, the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (click here to visit the Rocky Mountain Herbarium's website) contains the largest collection of Rocky Mountain plants and fungi in existence, as well as a good representation of the floras of other parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It ranks 17th in the nation with over 668,000 specimens.

The Rocky Mountain Herbarium also includes the National Herbarium of the U. S. Forest Service and the Wilhelm G. Solheim Mycological Herbarium. Thousands of specimens are loaned each year to recognized institutions throughout the United States whose research requires a knowledge of western plants.

Open to university students and other qualified researchers, the herbarium invites queries regarding the identification of plants. Those persons wishing assistance in the identification of plants should send duplicate specimens of each plant to the herbarium with information about the location and date of collection.

The Herbarium also contains a library with material relating to the systematic classification of vascular plants, including ferns and fern allies, conifers and other gymnosperms, and angiosperms or flowering plants, fungi, and to a lesser extent, mosses, lichens, and algae. Although there is representation from around the world, the collection is particularly strong in its coverage of western North America.
