AWARE in the Classroom

AWARE is very excited about the opportunity to visit classes on campus for presentations and skills training programs focused on alcohol and other drug use. We are able to tailor our program to fit the needs of the class. We offer different presentations based on the needs of the classroom.

Alcohol Skills Training is a popular presentation we conduct in classrooms and for campus organizations. During this presentation, we introduce students to the harm reduction based approach and discuss why education is key to making informed choices. We typically discuss the positives and the negatives associated with alcohol use, standard size drinks, blood alcohol concentration (BAC), tolerance, and tips for moderation and safety. We emphasize how students can keep themselves and others safe when alcohol is involved, focusing specifically on alcohol poisoning and driving under the influence. This is a collaborative presentation and students are encouraged to participate by asking questions and providing previously learned information. At least 50 minutes is needed for this presentation.
General presentations regarding what AWARE is and what we do. These presentations are generally presented to on campus organizations that work with students. During these presentations the goal is to provide information regarding the philosophy of AWARE, the different activities AWARE engages in with the campus and local community, the process of working with students, and a general overview of research. At least 30 minutes is needed for this presentation.
E-Chug and E-Toke are anonymous, interactive web based surveys that assess students alcohol and marijuana use and provides them feedback regarding their use relative to others. E-Chug takes approximately 7 minutes to complete and E-Toke takes approximately 13 minutes to complete. Although these surveys are anonymous, after a student completes the survey they are able to print a certificate of completion. Some classrooms frequently require or provide extra credit to students for completion of a survey.
Marijuana education training is another popular classroom presentation. During this presentation, we introduce students to the harm reduction based approach and discuss the importance of education for making informed choices. We then discuss the physiological, health, social, psychological, political, legal, and medicinal issues surrounding marijuana. We discuss expectations and reasons for use or non use. Furthermore, we discuss methods and strategies for decreasing consumption. This is a collaborative presentation and students are encouraged to participate by asking questions and providing previously learned information. At least 50 minutes is needed for this presentation.

TiPS Training
TiPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) helps encourage the responsible sale, service, and consumption of alcohol. TiPS for the University acknowledges that whether or not individuals choose to drink, all students could find themselves in situations where alcohol is being consumed. TiPS gives them the skills and the confidence to act responsibly in those situations. TiPS develops students' people skills and builds on their concern for their friends' safety and well-being.
