Campus Construction Update for Week of May 4-10

Facilities Planning project managers' report for week of May 4-10

ILLC -- Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion date: September 2009) Construction activities at the addition will include backfilling around the south foundation walls; installation of metal decking on north half; utility rough-ins on the south half; and fire proofing structural steel on the south half, 1st and 2nd levels.

On the 5th and 6th levels of the 70s addition, installation of base and doors will take place. The area will also be undergoing a final cleaning in preparation for final inspection.

13th street will close beginning May 12. The alley north of Knight Hall will accommodate two-way traffic and access the circle drive at the Wyoming Union.

Information Technology Facility (Scheduled completion date: December 2008) -- Site work: Excavation for the chilled water line is underway but all of the work is currently contained within the boundaries of the construction fence. The line will be installed in the Sorority Row street and run north across the site to connect at Willett Drive. The roads will be open until May 12. A temporary entry/exit has been set up on the east end of the site directly west of the Fine Arts building entrance. The concrete pad is being poured in the Chiller yard.

Drywall and light gauge metal framing: Drywall installation is underway in some areas on the 1st floor. Light gauge metal stud framing continues on the 3rd floor, the south entrance, the south stair tower, lobby atrium, and 2nd floor lounge/atrium. Insulation has been installed in the Central Machine Room on the second floor. Final framing of walls will take place in the Central machine Room this week.

Fire Protection: Installing piping on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

Masonry: Brick on the west end. The stone looks different colors because some of it has been washed and some still has the mortar and dust from the cutting process.

Roofing: The first layer of roof over the east end of the Central Machine Room is complete. Concrete roof curbs will be poured this week. Work will progress on the roof of the rest of the building.

Plumbing and HVAC: 1st floor near completion of room heating and air conditioning units, fire/smoke dampers, temperature controls, and piping. 2nd floor continue installation of room heating and air conditioning units, fire/smoke dampers, temperature controls, and piping. 3rd floor starts installation of room heating and air conditioning units, fire/smoke dampers, temperature controls, and piping. 4th floor mechanical penthouse continues installation of the rooftop air handling units and pumps. Work will continue on this equipment for several weeks.

Electrical: 1st floor, complete rough in, near completion of cable tray, continue pulling wire. 2nd floor, continue rough in, cable tray and electrical rooms. 3rd floor, set equipment in electrical rooms.

Glass: Taking measurements and doing fabrication.

Indoor Practice Facility -- Landscape work on the west side of the building will continue though the first part of May. Staging for the landscape contractor is on the southwest side of the parking lot.

Honors House -- The Kappa Sigma fraternity house at 15th and Willett Drive is being converted to a home for students in the Honors Program. Framing will continue on the east and south addition. Wall and roof sheathing is scheduled to be installed. Drywall installation will begin in the interior.

Education Annex Third Floor Renovations (Scheduled completion date: July 2008) -- Construction ongoing, staging area will take up three spaces in the Education parking lot.

Knight Hall Basement Renovations (Scheduled completion date: May 15, 2008) -- Construction ongoing. Staging area will take up one space in the Knight Hall alleyway.

College of Business -- At the end of the spring semester, faculty and staff in the College of Business will move to the lower three levels of Crane Residence Hall.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

Campus -- The chilled water system will be down for about one more week.

Half Acre Gym -- The roof of the infield area is being replaced and an air conditioning unit will be installed. A fenced construction area with a pedestrian walkway has been set up on the east side of the building. Indoor air temperature may be affected as construction activities continue. Work will continue for the remainder of the semester.

College of Engineering -- The west passenger elevator is back in service. The east elevator has been taken out of service to be upgraded and will be offline until early July. Please use the west elevator during this time.

Bureau of Mines Building -- Work is progressing on the elevator. It will remain offline for a few more weeks. Patrons are asked to use the stairs for access to upper floors. Coordination of deliveries is being handled by WRI administration and the Physical Plant project manager. Call the Service Desk for information on deliveries of large items. For persons with disability access needs, contact the required department within the building to make arrangements to accommodate the need and take care of necessary business. Alternatively, contact may be made with the University Disabilities Support Services office.

Electrical Switch Cleaning -- May 6, 5-7 p.m. Service Building and Storage Building on Gibbon; May 8, 5-7 p.m. McWhinnie Hall and Wyoming Hall. All effected departments have been notified.
