April 7, 1998 -- Public exhibits and a reception Friday, April 17, celebrate the election of George C. Frison, University of Wyoming professor emeritus of anthropology, to the National Academy of Sciences.
NAS membership is considered one of the highest honors accorded to scientists. Frison will be formally inducted in Washington, D.C., on April 25.
Exhibits of Frison's career and 50 years of archaeological research will be displayed at UW's American Heritage Center from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. A reception in the lobby is from 5-7 p.m.
Frison has had a notable career in unlocking the secrets of prehistoric Wyoming and the world. He has written more than 80 journal articles and seven books, including "Prehistoric Hunters of the High Plains."
In February, Frison was honored by a resolution read before the Wyoming Legislature. More recently, he was named to a new advisory board at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody; and the Board of Visitors for the College of Arts and Sciences established the George Frison Scholarship.
A Worland native, Frison first came to UW in September 1942. He stayed one semester before joining the Navy during World War II. After discharge, Frison ranched near Ten Sleep until 1962 when he returned to UW and received a B.S. degree in 1964. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, where he held a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.
RSVPs for the reception are requested by April 15. Call the UW Office of Research at (307) 766-5353. Posted on Tuesday, April 07, 1998
