Master of Arts

Admission

Students entering the Department of Anthropology's MA program must present evidence of a satisfactory background in anthropology, which generally would be the equivalent of an undergraduate major in anthropology. In those instances in which the undergraduate background of the student is deficient, the department reserves the right to prescribe course work to correct such deficiency before the student is permitted to undertake graduate study. The M.A. program is designed to be completed in two full years of graduate study. Appropriate allowance will be made for part-time students.

Degree Requirements

In addition to the minimum requirements listed in the bulletin, the Department of Anthropology has the following requirements:

1.Completion of the university requirements for the M.A. degree with either 26 hours of course work and a thesis or 30 hours of course work and a Plan B paper.

2.Successful completion of three semesters or the equivalent of a single foreign language, if not taken as an undergraduate; when appropriate, advanced linguistics involving work with a non-European language can be substituted for the language requirement.

3.Completion, with a grade of "B" or better, of a four course sequence; this sequence will consist of Anthropology 5010, 20th Century Anthropological Thought and ANTHO 5020,  Biological Anthropology in the fall semester; and ANTH 5015, Archaeological Theory and Method and Anthropology 5760, Linguistic Anthropology in the spring.

4.Successful completion of an hour-long oral exam with the department faculty early in the third semester (or after completion of the four core-course sequence). In the first semester the student will be given a list of questions pertaining to anthropology's four subfields; this list will constitute the bulk of discussion at the third semester meeting. While this list is not exhaustive, the ability to answer all of the questions on it should provide sufficient preparation for the exam. Prior to the exam, in mid-September, the student will hand in a 3 page statement that integrates three of anthropology's four subfields in light of the question list and the student's research interests; these will be read by the faculty members participating in the oral exam. If the student does not receive a passing grade for the oral exam, it can be repeated, once, at the end of that semester.
