BackgroundDr. Slater taught English at Rutgers University (1962-1967). She first arrived at the University of Wyoming in 1969, where she also taught English for one year before becoming an Associate Professor of Anthropology in 1970. She became a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wyoming in 1977, and continued to teach as the UW anthropology department's linguist through 1994. Dr. Slater has shared her linguistic expertise in a variety of ways during her time at UW. She has not only served as the Chair of the Anthropology Department (1987-1994), but also as the Chair of the Linguistics Degree Program (1982-1991), the Language Consultant for the Eastern Shoshone Nation (1987-present), and the Director of the Indian Education Office (1991-1993).
Courses Taught
Dr. Slater has taught many different linguistic courses throughout her career at UW, including Introduction to Linguistics, Advanced Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Phonetics and Phonology, Theory and Formation of Transformational Grammars, Linguistic Typology, History of the English Language, Sociolinguistics, Linguistic Field Techniques, and Modern English Grammar. She has recently taught Biblical Greek and Arapaho, in addition to working on a project involving the grammar of Eastern Shoshone.Return to Anthropology
