Wyoming State Archaeologist Dr. Mark Miller was raised on the family ranch in Carbon County, Wyoming, started by his great-grandfather in the 1870s. He developed a keen awareness of archaeology while working there. Always interested in landowner/resource issues, he served one year as Co-Chairman of the Public Lands Committee in the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. Miller received his B.A. in Anthropology in 1974 and his M.A. in Anthropology in 1976, both from the University of Wyoming. He earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado in 1979. Dr. Miller is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. Mark has worked in Wyoming archaeology since 1971, and has conducted additional research in adjacent states. He became Wyoming State Archaeologist in May 1984 and holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wyoming. The Office of Wyoming State Archaeologist is responsible under State Statute 36-4-106(d) for archaeological research, public outreach, publication, and collections management. Dr. Miller's current interests include historical archaeology of the Indian Wars Period, prehistoric adaptations in Wyoming, cultural ecology, teaching public archaeology, and enhancing public education about Wyoming archaeology. He has published his research in one book and several articles disseminated in a variety of outlets.
