Welcome to Animal Science

From Dr. Doug L. Hixon

Head and Professor of Animal Science

On behalf of 15 faculty and 22 staff members as well as 18 graduate students and approximately 210 undergraduate students, I welcome you to the University of Wyoming’s Department of Animal Science.  With forage-based livestock production systems playing a key role in the economic well being of the State of Wyoming, our Department maintains four priority areas of research including ruminant nutrition, reproductive biology, meat science and food technology, and integrated livestock production and management systems.  In addition, the Center for the Study of Fetal Programming was recently established as an interdisciplinary research effort that will involve over half of our faculty as well as developing collaboration with scientists across campus and across the country.  This exciting new area of research will benefit both livestock production systems and biomedical research in efforts to enhance the well being of offspring from both livestock and humans.

Approximately three years ago, the Animal Science and Veterinary Science Departments combined their curricula (ANVS).  This combined curriculum includes seven potential options for students interested in majoring in ANVS.  They include: Production, Business, Communications, Range Livestock, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Animal Biology, and Meat Science and Food Technology.  These options allow students to develop programs of study to best fit their interests and needs while providing flexibility in potential employment opportunities upon completion of their degree.

The Department of Animal Science supports several activities to enhance the educational experience of students.  These include competitive team activities such as Livestock, Meats and Wool Judging Teams; and, an Academic Quadrathlon Team.  Students can also participate and develop leadership skills as members of the Block & Bridle Club, the Food Science Club and Pre-Vet Club.

We are excited about all of the things we have going on in the Department of Animal Science.  We have lots of good people working together and applying the land grant principles of learning, engagement, and discovery for the benefit of our students, consumers and all clientele associated with animal agriculture.  If you have questions about any of our programs, please feel free to contact us at and we will try to answer them as soon as possible.
