 Livestock Judging Team

Participation on the University of Wyoming Livestock Judging Team is the perfect enhancement to a student’s education here in Laramie.  Students will learn to accurately evaluate market and breeding livestock as well as gain the communication skills that are necessary in the livestock industry.  The program also instills qualities such as confidence, decision making, teamwork, leadership, and dedication that can best be learned outside of a classroom setting.  These skills help students to become more marketable to future employment prospects.

Livestock Judging will allow students to apply learned skills at National contests, and to meet producers in various segments of the livestock industry.  With several nationally recognized producers nearby, and state of the art teaching facilities, the University of Wyoming offers one of the strongest programs in the nation. Experience the Livestock Judging Team as the perfect compliment to your collegiate experience.

How do I get Involved?

The first step is to sign up for Judging: Livestock ANSC 3550-01.  This is typically done during the Fall semester of your Sophomore or Junior year at The University of Wyoming.

How do I become part of the competitive team?

After being enrolled in the judging class for one semester, you are eligible to be selected as a member of the competitive team that travels to National contests.

Does the Livestock Judging Team give scholarships?

The UW Livestock Judging Team does not give individual scholarships.  All scholarships are academic based and are awarded through the Brand of Excellence Scholarship Program through the College of Agriculture.  For information on scholarships, please contact Laurie Bonini at (307) 766-4034 or by e-mail.

How does eligibility for the competitive team work?

A student is eligible to compete at a National Sr. College Judging contest if they have been enrolled at UW for at least one semester and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25.  You have one calendar year of competitive eligibility for livestock judging, which starts in January and ends in November of the same year.  A normal Livestock Judging career consists of one semester of class-work in the fall, practice and traveling to competitions in the spring, and concluding practice and competitions the following fall. This in no way affects eligibility for any other Judging Teams at UW.

Where do we go?

Contests are held across the U.S., so we will not always go to the same contests year after year.  Here is a list of some of the contests we have traveled to in the past.

(Typically, we compete at five contests each semester).
