admission requirements

To enter the American Studies Program students must have a desire to view American life from an interdisciplinary perspective. Many students enter with a strong background in one discipline; some have degrees in American Studies; a few are students who come to the Program many years after undergraduate study having had many valuable life experiences.

In addition to the minimum requirements set forth by the Graduate School, the American Studies program normally admits only those students who have achieved a 900 composite score on the GRE general examination. Normally, students are admitted in the spring for fall matriculation. Requests for financial aid should be directed to the program.

A writing sample or portfolio is strongly recommended for all applicants.

Those wishing to be considered for financial aid should submit all materials by February 15 for fall admission. Students applying to the historic preservation track may be able to enter under the auspices of the Western Regional Graduate Program. For eligibility inquire through the American Studies Office.

The Program expects a good undergraduate record, and above all, a desire to study American cultural life. Good performance on the Graduate Record Examination, an articulate writing sample, and a statement of purpose are all weighed in the admission process.
