Downtown Laramie

Coal Creek Coffee

110 E. Grand Ave

Coal Creek Coffee (it both serves drinks and sells beans) is a meeting place for both students and faculty members, even though it is over a mile from campus.

Coffee shops aren't absent in the rest of Wyoming, but they are scarce. Does the success of this shop lie in its proximity to a college campus?

Jeffrey's Bistro

123 Ivinson Ave

Jefrey's Bistro serves an eclectic selection of international, vegetarian, and gourmet dishes. In this cattle dependent state, Jeffrey's serves little beef.

The five bicycles present in the picture are as surprising as Jeffrey's menu in this oil-revenue-dependent state.

Muddy Water's Coffee House

113 E. Grand Ave.

Yet another coffee shop. Notice the casual, hand-painted sign that stands out when compared to the old, formal fronts of adjacent buildings.

The postings around the door of the coffee shop also demonstrate the draw this place holds for the university community.

"Reagan Knew" at Jeffrey's Too

116 S. 2nd

The bumper sticker pasted to the door at the extreme left of the picture says "Reagan Knew." This refers to the Iran-Contra scandal of the mid-eighties.

In a state that voted overwhelmingly for the Republican presidential candidate in November of 2000, this is a liberal statement.

The right half of the picture contains the now defunct Sara's Bakery (aka Jeffrey's Too). Evidently, the windows of the store were frequently used to post community events.

Sweet Melissa's

213 S. 1st

Sweet Melissa's is a vegetarian soul food restraunt. The sign is informal, hand-painted, and the windows are used as a community event posting board.

The bicycle also demonstrates the pull this place holds for people who use bicycles as a form of transportation.

Terrapin Station

301 S. 2nd

As the sign suggests, Terrapin Station harkens back to the sixties in its choice of merchendise. The store sells a variety of tie-died and "hippie" clothing.

Notice the conveniently placed bicycle rack out front. This is one of a set of city installed bike racks. These racks seek to attrack customers whose primary mode of transportation is the bicycle.
