I-80 Sights

The Lincoln Monument in particular links back again to the tourist who is traveling the highway on the way to somewhere else. This image is fairly common at a number of postcard sites and appears on at least one collage postcard. Once again this is an image that can be viewed from the road, as you are passing through. Directly on I-80, the Lincoln Monument is a symbol of that highway but it is difficult to stop and take a decent photo of. Postcards therefore provide a record of that image in an easily accessible form.

The collage postcard is of Wyoming scenes along I-80, of which two, the Lincoln Monument and Vedauwoo are near Laramie. The other images include Green River, a cow by some wind turbines and a pastoral scene. None of the images are further identified on the back other than simply being in Wyoming and along I-80. Laramie, and its surrounding areas are seen as simply a place you pass thorough on your way to the rest of Wyoming, samplers of what is yet to come. As a symbol of Laramie the Lincoln Monument celebrates the road, in particular I-80, and travel and journey. Historically many pioneer trails passed through or close to Laramie and very few people stopped here, considering it their final destination. The flow of people just passing through the area has continued to the present. [Picture, Ref 21]
