SPARXStudent Providers Aspiring to Rural eXperiences (SPARX) began at the University of Wyoming in the fall of 2002 and was modeled after a similar program at the University of Washington. SPARX is sponsored by the Division of Medical Education and Wyoming Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The University of Wyoming SPARX Program has developed into a one-credit class. These classes cut across educational disciplines and draw students University-wide with health career interests.
The fall semester SPARX class is for upper-division and professional students. Each year the topic changes but the class is developed from a current research topic. Past class titles include: Alzheimer's Disease, Medical Mistakes, and Remembered Wellness (Another Name for the Placebo Effect). Fall 2008 topic is Meeting the Psycho-Social Needs of Cancer Patients.
The Spring SPARX class is designed to appeal to freshmen and sophomores. The focus changes every year, but alternative views of health care are used as the springboard for developing that class. Past class titles include: Animal-Assisted Therapy, Music Therapy, and Fictional Portrayals of Alzheimer's Disease.
All the SPARX classes are inter-professional with health science majors, psychology majors, animal sciences majors, music majors, and business majors represented. The format is discussion and small-group based.
