University of Wyoming

Scholarships and tuition discounts
available to children of UW alumni

Residents of Wyoming

Residents of Wyoming who are children of UW graduates receive the best rate possible in the way of resident tuition. These students will be considered for the President’s Promise and Trustees’ Pride Scholarships as incoming freshmen, or the John W. Hoyt Scholarship if they are transferring to UW.

Non-Residents

Children of graduates of the University of Wyoming who are not Wyoming residents receive a reduced tuition rate equal to 150% of that paid by Wyoming residents. This benefit is awarded for as long as the student is enrolled at UW, and applies to undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional work. Qualified students also receive this benefit for enrollment during summer sessions. There are no restrictions on the number of enrolled credit hours.

Incoming freshmen receiving the Child of Alumni discount may also qualify for additional scholarships under the Peak Achievement Scholarship program according to their cumulative high school GPA and ACT or SAT scores:

The 'minimum value' of the alumni benefit for a student taking twelve credit hours per semester (minimum amount required to be considered a full time student) is $4,104 at current tuition rates. Additional Peak Achievement Scholarship amounts are based on the maximum amounts of UW scholarships available to non-residents under the Peak Achievement Scholarship program. For example, a student who is a child of a UW alumnus with a 3.8 GPA and a 28 ACT receives approximately $4,100 in tuition discounts and an additional $2,900 in Peak Achievement to bring the value of their package up to the $7,000 level. If this student takes more than 12 credits per semester will receive an overall value of their package greater than the $7,000 because of additional discounting on each credit hour.

Non-resident transfer students who are children of alumni are not awarded additional scholarships, as the value of their discount is greater than any available Peak Achievement Scholarship that is available to transfer students.

Peak Achievement Scholarship commitments will be fulfilled first by any funds that may be awarded by other UW-based academic scholarships awarded to the student (via donors, departments, etc). These scholarships are not awarded in addition to the Peak Achievement Scholarship. Questions regarding how other scholarships interact with this scholarship should be directed to the UW Student Financial Aid Office at (307) 766-2116.

To apply for the Child of Alumni discount and additional Peak Achievement Scholarships:

  • Apply for admission and be admitted to UW (www.uwyo.edu/apply)
  • Be sure to provide alumni parent information requested on the admission application
  • Submit official high school transcripts
  • Submit official ACT/SAT test scores
  • Submit the $40 admission application fee
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Students are provisionally awarded scholarships by the UW Admissions Office shortly after being admitted. Final awards are made upon receipt of all final academic records. A student’s scholarship award may go up or down based on final GPA and test scores.

Peak Achievement Scholarships are only available to first-time, incoming freshmen seeking their first bachelor's degree, but are renewable for up to 8 semesters (4 years). Students must maintain full-time enrollment in Laramie campus courses (12 semester hours) during the Fall and Spring semesters each year and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA. The Child of Alumni benefit has no restrictions for continued eligibility.

Children of UW graduates also have the opportunity to apply for scholarships awarded by the UW Alumni Association. To view and apply for Alumni Association scholarships, go to www.wyoalumni.com/applicationScholarships.html.
