Last year, the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning made $30,000 available to fund 13 Assessment Assistance Grants. Responding to requests from the academic deans and department leaders, the UW Assessment Coordinators, in collaboration with the ECTL and Academic Affairs, invited department or program proposals for assessment assistance. To view the 13 proposals funded during the 2004-05 academic year, click here.
An additional $30,000 will be available for the second round of assessment assistance during the 2005-06 academic year. You are invited to submit your proposal by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2005.
Proposals are limited to no more than $3,000 in funding. Submissions for less are ok.
All applications must be completed and delivered electronically to academic affairs before the established deadline. Send completed applications via e-mail attachment to Erika Prager at ekprager@uwyo.edu. To retrieve the application, click here and save file (Word format.)
While a variety of assessment related projects are encouraged, the ECTL and Assessment Coordinators group are especially interested in the those which include one or more of the following:
Direct measures of student achievement/learning. (A direct measure of student achievement is “tangible, visible, self-explanatory evidence of exactly what students have and haven’t learned” (Suskie, 2004, Assessing Student Learning: A Common Sense Guide, pages 95-96).
Identification of student learning outcomes
Analysis of a specific set of data aimed at assessing a particular goal or outcome
Creation of Web sites/pages to post assessment related information for students and other departments.
Projects involving department or program work group, cross-department workgroup, cross-college work group or other collaborative efforts.
A member of the UW Assessment Coordinators will serve as a project mentor and help the contact person guide the assessment assistance project.
Successful applicants should anticipate reinvestment into UW’s assessment work by sharing the results of the assessment assistance with some part of the university community.
Preference will be given to new projects over continuations of projects already funded.

Summary of 2004-05 Funded Proposals
Step 1. Download the application. Click here and save file (Word format.)
Step 2. Complete the application as follows:
Describe your department, program, and/or college assessment work to date. Include relevant information from your department/program’s assessment plan and/or annual reports to provide context for your proposal.
In no more than two pages (approximately 750 words), explain the assistance you require, using the following outline:
Purpose: What will you do; why is it important?
Participants: Who will be involved and why? List all persons including names and qualifications of external consultants.
Timeline: What is your time line for the project? Using a weekly or monthly calendar, detail when you will start, each step of what you will do, and when you plan to be done. (All money must be spent by June 30, 2006 because of the end of the biennium. Projects must be completed by December 31, 2006.)
Provide budget details including a narrative and itemized budget. What will the assessment assistance cost, including in-kind or matching funds? (You may include a separate page in Word or Excel for the itemized budget).
Provide your ideas on how you might share the results of your Assessment Assistance Grant with some part of the university community.
Step 3. Submit proposal via e-mail attachment to Erika Prager at ekprager@uwyo.edu Cc: your college dean on the e-mail.
A three-person sub-committee of the UW Assessment Coordinators will review the proposals and notify applicants by November 15, 2005.
Because of the end of biennium, all money must be spent by June 30, 2006.
Projects may begin immediately and should be completed by December 31, 2006.
The review panel will use the following criteria in assessing the proposals:

Project participants are listed and their roles described. Internal and external consultants are identified.
The timeline is clear, detailed, and sensible.
The budget is accurate, detailed, and sensible.
The project has the potential to be a model for other UW departments or programs.
The project emphasizes one or more of the five areas highlighted in the call for proposals.
