Subject: Sabbatical/professional development leave applications for 2006-07
TO:  A&S Faculty and Extended-Term Academic Professionals
FROM:  Henry Bauer
    Monday, October 3, 2005 is the due date in the A&S Dean's Office for applications for sabbatical leaves and professional development leaves for 2006-2007.  Note that the November 1 date in Myron Allen’s memo is the date the Dean must submit the forms to Academic Affairs.  First, the A&S Central Committee ranks the proposals.

    Myron Allen's memo and the application form is on the forms area of the Academic Affairs' web page at
 http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/acadaffairs/Forms/index.asp
    The paragraph for the Trustees must be written in the third person
    Department heads should note the content requirements for their letters of support of the leave: how the duties of the faculty member would be performed if the sabbatical or professional development leave is granted and a proposed budget for meeting the cost, if any, of replacement instruction. The budget should list each course and its replacement cost.   Remember to include courses taught outside the department, if applicable.   Usually, the Dean's Office will offer up to $1,000 per credit hour for two-semester leaves and $0 for one-semester leaves.

  You may look at the following URL to find (1) what sorts of paragraphs go into the Trustees' Report and (2) what types of sabbatical projects got approved.

  Applications from A&S faculty and AP's are reviewed and ranked by the A&S Central Committee.  That committee has set these guidelines for its rankings.

=============
 Sabbatical Guidelines

 The Central Committee recommends a ranking of the sabbatical applications to the dean.  That Committee listed the following preferences to guide its  ranking.

 1.     Well-written and understandable proposals which include specific  plans.

 2.     Full-year sabbaticals.

 3.     Cost effective coverage of applicant's teaching.   If teaching interdisciplinary or cross-listed courses, applicant must make the relevant department chair(s) aware of their application.  Department chairs and program directors should address the coverage of the candidate's teaching responsibilities within and beyond the home department.

 4.     Sabbaticals in which the applicant will not reside on his/her home  campus.  Evidence of formal connections with another institution will be  viewed positively.

 5.     If applicant had received previous sabbaticals, evidence of  subsequent accomplishments resulting from the sabbatical or sabbaticals.

 6.     Applicant's academic accomplishments.

 7.     The Central Committee will be sensitive to the needs of faculty  couples and family  situations.
