7.         State-funded graduate assistantships

Most college graduate assistantships (GAship) are used by departments for teaching assistants.  A full GAship carries an award of a stipend, tuition, health insurance and (most) fees in exchange for 18 hours of work per week.  The base stipend is $10,062.  A doctoral enhancement of $3,942 is available.  Students receiving this enhancement must have their Program of Study completed and on file with the Graduate School by the middle (see specific dates on each year’s memo from the Graduate School) of their second semester in order to continue to qualify for these enhancements.  For 2002-03, the second semester dates are February 28, 2003 and October 31, 2003 depending on the student’s matriculation date.

The College receives an allotment of GAships from the Graduate School and allocates these to the departments.  Estimates are made concerning the number of doctoral stipends.  The College no longer receives the funds for stipends and has not received the funds for tuition, fees and health insurance.

GAships are valuable resources in attracting graduate students and in planning course scheduling.  Use them wisely.

Be alert for competitions for special assistantships biennially and for women and minority assistantships.  The latter are awarded on a first come, first served basis.
