Paul Carlin says an A&S education gave him "breadth of knowledge and confidence to pursue challenges with vigor." A skilled administrator for almost 40 years, he is currently Chairman of BME (Business Mail Enterprises) of Reston, VA. At UW, Carlin lettered in track and cross country every year, and was the first recipient of UW's Emory S. Land Outstanding Athlete Award. As a ROTC commissioned 2nd lieutenant, he served in the Army in Germany. At age 24, he was the youngest visiting Fulbright Professor ever selected, spending a year at the University of Baghdad. He combined UW graduate study with duties as Laramie Assistant City Manager. After earning his MA, he was hired as UW Director of Student Employment, Graduate Placement and Veteran Relations. In 1960, the Jaycees named him "Wyoming's Outstanding Young Man." From 1961-68, he was a top administrator in several national associations in Washington, D.C.-- the National Association of Counties and the National School Boards and National Audio-Visual associations. He was instrumental in passing federal legislation in conservation, education, and community health. In 1965, U.S. Jaycees listed him as one of "Ten Outstanding Young Men of America." In 1969, he joined the U.S. Postal Service, and was Eastern and Central Regional Postmaster General before being named Postmaster General. In 1970, he received the Benjamin Franklin Award, the Postal Service's highest award for managerial excellence, for his role in developing and enacting the Postal Reorganization Act. He recalls, "The Wyoming wind -- a refreshing reminder that each person is free, limited only by the barriers that they themselves erect." |
