For Jack Ellbogen, the greatest treasures from his time on campus are "... the friends made, and how so many of these friendships have grown and continued throughout the years." Born and reared in Worland, Wyoming, he followed his undergraduate degree with three years in the U.S. Army. He returned here to earn a law degree in 1950. He then worked for Carter Oil Company's Exploration Division for five years before becoming an independent lease banker and a prime mover in forming four of Wyoming's large successful corporations. Throughout his distinguished business career, Ellbogen has shown continuing care and concern for UW. He has been Director and Vice President of the University of Wyoming Foundation, and has given strong financial support to UW programs in athletics and the arts. To recognize and encourage outstanding teaching, he established the Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award, one of the most coveted faculty awards at UW. In 1980, he was named a UW Distinguished Alumnus. A loyal Cowboy fan, he remembers "...the thrill and pride when the 1943 University of Wyoming basketball team won both the National Invitational Basketball and NCAA titles. Also, the victory at the Gator Bowl by the 1953 football team, which presaged a new era in Wyoming football." "I place a great deal of value on my A&S education. It gave me an appreciation for the broader aspects of living, rather than just the tools to make a living. I am grateful for the interest the liberal arts created for me in aesthetic subjects such as history, art, music and travel. It served as a springboard for intellectual and social accomplishments, which have enriched my life." |
