Later, at the University of California School of Medicine, he held the same position, further developing his leadership abilities. Today, be is Director of Trauma Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. Before enrolling at UW, Eastman says, "I was briefly tempted to 'Go East' to Dartmouth, which dangled before me an athletic scholarship and the excitement of an unknown world. In the end, logistics and economics sent me off on the train to Laramie. I've never regretted that turn of events. Certainly one proof of the quality of my undergraduate education was the foundation it laid for all my subsequent professional development." At UW, Dr. L. Floyd Clarke, chairman of the Zoology Department, a "kindly, bespectacled intellectual," became Eastman's professor, advisor, and friend. Because of Clarke's guidance and the general education UW provided, Eastman was able to enter the medical school of his choice, the University of California at San Francisco, where he studied postgraduate training in general and vascular surgery. He is also assistant clinical professor of Surgery/ Trauma at the University of California and has held chairs with the Centers for Disease Control, including his present position as chairman of the Injury Research Grant Review Committee. He co-chairs the San Diego Trauma System Medical Audit Committee. His numerous other chairmanships include those of the Department of General Surgery at Scripps, and the Committee on Trauma for San Diego and Imperial Counties for the American College of Surgeons. |
