Giving

Links to Ben Franklin Circle and Distinction Campaign

Like the Dean, department heads use much of their discretionary funds to help students present papers at professional meetings, attend field courses, and conduct research in off-campus locations. Your annual support enriches students’ academic experiences. To contribute to these funds, please make checks payable to The University of Wyoming Foundation and mail to:
           UW Foundation
           1200 E. Ivinson Avenue
           Laramie, WY  82070

Be sure to specify the particular department or program you choose to support or if you prefer your contribution to go to the College’s general fund.

You may now give to the College of Arts and Sciences directly via the Web by going to the University of Wyoming Foundation.  Again, please be sure to note the program you want supported by your gift.  Thank you!

Ben Franklin Circle

Established by the A&S Board of Visitors in 2000, the Ben Franklin Circle recognizes and encourages the steady supporters of the College of Arts and Sciences.  Membership begins with two consecutive years of contributions and continues as long as gifts are made each fiscal year (July 1st through June 30th).

Annual gifts are vital to the college and its departments and programs. With your broad-based and continuing support, we help students study abroad, present papers at professional meetings, perform original research in the field, and compete in debate. Your gifts also help to bring distinguished speakers, scholars, and artists to campus. Contributions may add specimens to labs, computers to classrooms, or journal subscriptions for departments. In short, your annual gifts raise the level of excellence in all we do, and we thank you!

Distinction Campaign and A&S

A&S is a full participant in DISTINCTION: The Campaign for Wyoming’s University.  Now in its fifth and final year, the Campaign already has made a significant impact on the College.

Key Achievements:

  • Three new endowed faculty chairs
Robert B. Berry Distinguished Chair in Ecology
             Gardner Chair in Physiology
Brainerd Mears Chair in Surficial Processes and Climate

  • Twelve new Excellence Funds in support of students and academic programs across the college

  • An $800,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles to the Department of Chemistry to develop a new technology for studying electrochemical properties through nuclear magnetic resonance.

  • Many new endowments to benefit students directly, including Summer Independent Research Awards, scholarships, travel awards, and internship support grants.

Wyoming State Matching Gift Program

Funds have been set aside by the Wyoming State Legislature to match gifts of $50,000 and more for endowments that are given by a single entity (individual, family, business, or association). The original $30 million allotment has been claimed, and a new $18 million was allocated in FY2004. Certain planned gifts, such as charitable annuities, also qualify for matching funds.

A&S Top Priorities

Student Awards
Encourage both graduate and undergraduate students to tap into the many enriching opportunities in A&S by adding to existing funds or creating an endowment for scholarships, internships, and/or research fellowships.

Study Abroad Awards

Add to this scholarship fund or create a new one so that more students can experience and gain understanding about our global society from fresh perspectives.

Professorships

Establish a faculty chair in anthropology, botany, chemistry, geology, history, math, or zoology.  With competitive faculty positions, these areas of distinction will gain prestige, attract even better students and colleagues, and earn more research grants.

Visiting professors and artists

Enhance the campus experience by introducing the ideas and creativity of renowned scholars and artists. Long-term visitors are especially important to interdisciplinary programs (American, American Indian, African American, Chicano, International, Religious, and Women’s Studies), professional programs (journalism, creative writing,), and the arts. Create a targeted endowment or add to the Dean’s Excellence Fund.

Distinguished Speaker Series

Broaden student exposure to new concepts, combat Wyoming’s relative isolation, increase opportunities for stimulating exchange of ideas, and show visitors the remarkable quality of UW students by contributing funds to host distinguished speakers from all academic disciplines and careers, and from diverse ethnic, racial, and national backgrounds.

Facilities and equipment

Link your name to an enduring institution and show generations to come your commitment to and support of higher education. Naming opportunities accompany substantial aid to refurbishing labs, modernizing classrooms, and adding wings to buildings.
