Wilson O. Clough |

Poet and writer, teacher and scholar, Wilson O. Clough dedicated his professional life to the University of Wyoming and its Department of English. During his career, he produced 50 articles, 12 books and scores of poems. Familiar with Latin, Greek, German, Old English and French, he translated a number of works from the latter language, which he studied in France after serving there during WWI. Later, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Colorado, and in 1924, joined UW’s English department. From 1946 to 1949, he headed the department, overseeing the separation of journalism and communications into other departments. In addition, Clough was instrumental in planning and teaching in the American Studies Program, which was created during his tenure. Among his books was The Necessary Earth: Nature in Solitude in American Literature, which explored the impact of the frontier experience on the nation’s writers. Clough died in 1990. |
