 T. A. "Al" Larson

"T. A. Larson interacted remarkably with students, making almost a ritual of being available in his office, eight hours a day. 'Mr. Chips' could hardly do more." -William Steckel Professor Emeritus, History

For almost 60 years, T. A. Larson has been "Mr. Wyoming History." He has been a university professor, scholar, lobbyist for appreciation of Wyoming's history, and state legislator. After studying at the University of Colorado, he was awarded his doctorate in 1936 at the University of Illinois with a specialty in medieval history. He was offered a position at the University of Wyoming on condition that he develop a course on Wyoming history. Thus a medieval scholar was on his way to becoming the expert on Wyoming history.

Dr. Larson headed the History Department for 21 years and was director of the School of American Studies for 10 years. He authored several books, including an award-winning textbook on Wyoming history. He is estimated to have taught over 16,000 University of Wyoming students.
