From his first position as an instructor at the University of Wyoming to his retirement from the Department of Zoology in 1984, Dr. George T. Baxter was an acclaimed teacher who stimulated, encouraged and challenged a generation of students.

Dr. Baxter received his bachelor's and master's degrees from UW and became an instructor in the Department of Zoology and Physiology in 1947. He continued working on his Ph.D., which he completed at the University of Michigan in 1951, returning afterwards to UW as an assistant professor of Zoology.

Throughout his long career, and continuing into retirement, he has built a record as a distinguished scholar with a national reputation as the acknowledged expert on fish, reptiles and amphibians of Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain region. His books on these subjects will long serve as standard references in these fields.
