Allen Subject: President Buchanan's Foundation Fund As we discussed at our last Heads’ meeting, President Buchanan has been allocated discretionary funds from the Foundation: Last year, the Foundation provided Tom with funds in the amount of $250,000 for distribution to campus projects. In their February meeting the Foundation increased this fund to $350,000. At the February meeting President Buchanan outlined three operating principles that he used to decide upon his allocation: 1) projects related to students; 2) sought breadth in the distribution of these funds, to assist as many departments and programs as possible; 3) these funds were used to leverage additional funds to make the project happen; in no case were the funds the only money used for any of these projects. In my opinion, the meaning is clear: requests should be for students; rarely will President fund projects for more than around $10,000 and probably $5,000 is a better target; and you should indicate the amount the department will to contribute. In consultation with Vice President Allen, we have decided that requests should come to me, I will comment upon them (and when appropriate contribute A&S discretionary funds) and send the requests on to Myron who will forward them to Tom. Requests should always go through the department or program director. You are the gatekeeper. |
