Dear Colleagues:
I wish to inform you about the appointment of an
Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research in the College of
Engineering & Applied Science. Professor Andrew C. Hansen will formally
begin this position as of next Monday, January 14. The position has a
three-year, renewable term.
The general charge for the Associate Dean GP&R will
be to work with me (as Dean) in coordinating, and substantially
developing, the College’s efforts regarding programs of graduate study and
research. This charge entails the following component responsibilities
shared with me:
- Provide leadership in developing and coordinating
programs of graduate study, especially those entailing
cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary courses offered by several
departments and schools within the University. Of immediate interest
is the College’s work with the School of Energy Resources to establish
energy-related curricular opportunities and research initiatives
involving the College’s students, faculty, and staff. Similar
development and coordination interests exist in other areas, such as
water, advanced computer-modeling, and societal infrastructure;
- Foster and oversee the development of external
support for the College’s research endeavors. This effort will involve
interacting with diverse agencies and industries providing funding. It
also will involve working with the College’s Development Director and
faculty in developing gifting opportunities;
- Direct the College’s acquisition and management of
assistantships, scholarships, and fellowships to support graduate
students;
- Manage the College’s research infrastructure,
including space assignment and renewal, equipment, and technical
support;
- Work with the University’s Graduate School in
establishing and coordinating programs of graduate study;
- Work with the University’s Office of
Vice-President for Research and Economic Development in pursuing and
coordinating research projects as well as pertinent economic development
prospects; and,
- Monitor the College’s performance with respect to
graduate-student recruitment and graduation, research and scholarly
output, as well as support of State efforts at economic development.
Over the coming semester, Professor Hansen will be in
touch with several of you to learn more about your activities related to
graduate studies and research, and ascertain how our College can best
progress in developing its graduate-study and research programs.
I earnestly appreciate Professor Hansen’s
willingness to assume this important position, and look forward to working
with him in shaping the position.
Regards,
- Rob
