University of Wyoming Ram Tests

Since 1961, the Animal Science Department has conducted an annual Ram Test.  The test is designed primarily for Rambouillet rams; however, other white face breeds have been tested over the years.

The test generally starts the first part of October and is concluded with a field day and sale in March.  Ram lambs are delivered to U.W. by producers, all rams are shorn and then fed for 140 days.  At the end of the test, rams are shorn again and individual fleece characteristics are measured.

This information is then combined with gain data to compile an overall index.  The top 30% of registered Rambouillet rams on test are then eligible to become a Certified Sire.  Current cost for the test is $255.00. Junior participants will pay $190 for their first ram on test and then $255 for subsequent rams entered.
