For detailed information on this change please see the Multimedia FAQ at http://www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=676&parentid=1, under "How do I upload files to my multimedia site?"

2/11/09 - FrontPage Extended sites are no longer an option for DNS hosted sites

From here on out, due to the end of life of FrontPage extension getting near, all requests for DNS hosted sites will be set up as basic sites. The option for FrontPage Extended sites for DNS hosted sites is no longer an option through the form on the Central Site Requests page. Users can still request FrontPage Extended sites on UWADMNWEB, UWACADWEB, etc., only the creation of FrontPage Extended sites as a DNS hosted site has been removed.

5/5/08 - .NET 3.5 available on Production and Development Web Servers

We have recently upgraded the Production web server, in addition to the Development web server on 4/22/08, to now have the .NET 3.5 framework available for use. The .NET 3.5 Framework also includes the .NET 3.0 framework. Please Note: Requests to make the .NET 3.5 Framework available to your site must be submitted through https://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/centralsiterequests/ under “Contact IT about other site request”. - If you have already requested that your site be set to have .NET 3.5 available in Development (webdev or webdevfp), you do not need to submit another request for Production. - Specify the name of your site and that you want it to have .NET 3.5 available to it, in the text box. - Then submit your request. Please note, if your site is already at .NET 2.0 you will automatically have 3.5 available to you as it is just an extension to 2.0. By default, all sites are created with .NET 1.1. You can also visit http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/webnews/CurrentEvents/dot_NET_3x_Update.htm for this announcement. Information about the .NET Framework can be found at, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/default.aspx

4/22/2008

We have recently upgraded the Development web server to now have the .NET 3.5 framework available for testing. The .NET 3.5 Framework also includes the .NET 3.0 framework. If you have a development site, sites that reside on either WEBDEV or WEBDEVFP, you can have the .NET 3.5 framework available to them by requesting to have the site changed to this version of .NET. Requests can be submitted through https://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/centralsiterequests/ under “Contact IT about other site request”. Specify the name of your Development site and that you want it to have .NET 3.5 available to it, in the text box. Then submit your request. Please note, if your site is already at .NET 2.0 you will automatically have 3.5 available to you as it is just an extension to 2.0. We are releasing this to the Development server for preliminary testing. The production web server will be soon to follow. Information about the .NET Framework can be found at, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/default.aspx

8/1/07 - FrontPage and FrontPage Extensions to be Discontinued in lieu of new Microsoft technologies called Web Expressions.

The Demise of FrontPage, how will this affect UW Sites? As some of you may know, Microsoft is discontinuing the FrontPage application and introducing a new product line called Microsoft Expressions (which comprises a suite of applications including Web Designer, Interactive Designer, and Graphic Designer) in conjunction with the Microsoft Visual Studio product. The Web Designer product most closely matches the existing FrontPage application, though, from its initial appearance, this application has been rebuilt from the ground up to cater to Web design professionals as it includes extensive use of CSS as the basis for Web site design and management. Additionally, the product is closely tied to the Microsoft Visual Studio products that are used for client interaction. Instead of this all being based on the FrontPage extensions, the underlying technology now relies on the .NET framework to handle interactive processing. Microsoft has stated that the Expression’s line of products will be launched in the second half of 2006 (Visual Studio is available now). At this time Information Technology has no plans to discontinue the server-side functionality provided by FrontPage extensions. We recognize that there are a large number of sites utilizing the FrontPage extensions and that those sites will not be going away anytime soon, so support of the legacy products will remain for an extended timeline (at least a year, probably more like 2). However, the fact remains that any sites built on the FrontPage technology from this point forward will be subject to the demise of the product and the discontinuation of support from Microsoft. For that reason, we will be evaluating the need for continued creation of FrontPage sites as well as training on the FrontPage application in the near future. We will likely set a cut-off date for ceasing creation of FrontPage sites and will discontinue training on the FrontPage product. This timeline will be fairly short as it doesn’t make sense to increase the number of sites that will have to be converted to a new structure at some point in the future. In addition, University Public Relations will continue implementing the content management approach for UW sites meant for public visitors. This is an opportunity to streamline the content management processes and to take our online presence to a much more robust and consistent look and feel, as well as provide a high level of interoperability to current clients with a quality professional service. Also please note: due to a lack of attendance and high costs, the Web Designers group meetings, which were held every first and third Wednesday of the month, have been discontinued. For Web content- related questions and help, please see the following campus resources: Departmental: University Public Relations Students: Academic Support Unit Faculty: For help with web authoring alternatives for classes, such as online course platforms, electronic portfolio and project software, or HTML and other website development methods, please consult the resources of the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning: Center for Teaching and Learning If you are having trouble accessing your site or there is a problem with the server please contact your Departmental Computer Support Specialist or the Information Technology Helpdesk (766-HELP 4357). To help support existing sites, FrontPage support and limited training is still available from the IT Training Program through 1-1 consulting sessions and training manuals however; we recommend contacting University Public Relations for content related questions as they may be able to develop a more comprehensive solution that will meet your needs. Please contact University Public Relations or see the Information Technology Training web site for more information. We will be providing additional information as soon it becomes available. Please continue checking the http://www.uwyo.edu/webnews site for updates. 12/1/06 - Site Request Utilities Updated

Central Site Request Utilities Updated. This is a quick update to let you know that we have introduced some new utilities to make site requests quicker and more consistent. These utilities include functionality to:

  1. Create new sites
  2. Delete existing sites
  3. Change authorship rights for existing sites
  4. Lookup configuration information for your site
  5. Add server DSN's to sites
  6. Request WWW.UWYO.EDU server redirects
  7. Request Site Configuration Changes
  8. Request Site Quota Changes (note: charges apply)
  9. Request DNS Hosted sites (note: charges apply)

From this point forward all site requests need to be routed through these online utilities. This will help ensure we get consistent information to speed up request processing. As a part of speeding up this processing some of the utilities have been automated. To protect the security of sites, certain requests for existing sites can ONLY be completed by the person that is designated as the Site's Manager (this is usually the person who originally requested the site). If you find that your site doesn't have a manager designated, or an incorrect person is currently the designated manager, you can contact the IT Helpdesk at 766-4357 and they can put through an internal request to have the information updated. The utilities can be found by performing the following: Open a web browser and go to http://www.uwyo.edu/WebNews Click the UW SITE UTILITIES toolbar button Enter your UWYO Domain credentials when prompted If you have any questions please contact your User Consultant.
