WRRC Soil Kits . . .

Soil KitOne complete kit includes: plastic tool box, pH meter, EC/TDS/SALT/Temperature meter, pH buffer solution, conductivity calibration solution, HCl (10%),  book of Munsell charts, Field Book for Describing and Sampling Soils, set of soil characteristic charts, slope calculator, metal thermometer, soil sieve, measuring tube, plastic cups, plastic quart bags, distilled water, measuring tape (metric & english), 1/4 measuring cup, 1-inch (wide) spatula, plastic spoons, red pegs and nails, sharpie, spade, magnifying glass, safety goggles

The purpose of these kits is for the user to collect basic soil information in the field, without having to take soils to an analytical soils laboratory.  Much of the information that can be obtained using this protocol and kit are approximations.  The value of the information will be dependent on the care, skill and training of the user.  Many users who have had formal training in ecology, chemistry and soil science will find the use of these kits straight forward.  However, there is no substitute for formal training and practice.  The soils information one can secure from proper use of these kits is not a substitute for soils information that can be had from certified soil testing laboratories.  The field information one can secure can supplement lab information or might help direct the type of analysis a certified lab may do, but especially for most research or legal effort certified information may be required.  The University of Wyoming does offer a complete Soil Testing Laboratory.  A link to their website can be found under the Quick Links listed to your right.
