Goals of the Agroecology undergraduate program:

Agroecology is the science of sustainable agriculture. The goal of the Agroecology undergraduate program is to promote the adoption of more sustainable agricultural practices in the United States and abroad.

Objectives of the Agroecology undergraduate program:

To convey the mathematical and scientific principles relevant to agricultural practices.

To expose students to a diversity of agricultural principles and practices in the classroom, the student laboratory, and the field.

To provide students with practical experience of agriculture through internships and hands-on coursework.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Agroecology undergraduate program.

1. Agroecology graduates must be able form sound conclusions from the critical evaluation of empirical data. They must be able to distinguish beliefs and assumptions from conclusions that are legitimately based on demonstrable evidence and must understand how to apply the scientific method and its derivatives to arrive at such conclusions.

2. Agroecology graduates must possess written and oral communication skills and math skills sufficient for employment as an agricultural professional or for admission to graduate study, depending on their track in the Agroecology program.

3. Agroecology graduates must possess the appropriate knowledge of physics, chemistry, geology, cell biology, physiology, genetics, evolution, and ecology to be participants in modern agriculture.

4. Agroecology graduates must possess practical knowledge and skills that include the use of computer technology for writing, analysis of data, and research; the use of geographical information systems; chemical and biological analyses of soil and water; diagnosis of plant disease, stress, and injury; identification of plants and insects; and basic practices of horticulture and agronomy.
