Minority and Women Graduate Assistantships

This program is designed to promote recruitment and retention of minority students in any field of study or women students pursuing Ph.D.'s in underrepresented fields (see below for a list of disciplines that qualify).  These GA's are provided by the Graduate School and are awarded on a competitive basis (i.e., evidence of scholarship ability).  They are principally awarded to attract new minority and/or women students to our graduate programs.  These nominees must be U.S. citizens.

The Graduate School will pay the full stipend and tuition reduction, plus college fees (excluding the computer fee) for the first year and one half the stipend and tuition/fee reduction for the fall and spring semesters of the second year of study.  After the second year, the stipend is the sole responsibility of the department/program.

The department will forward any supporting nominations to the Graduate School each year, once the Graduate School announces the call for nominations.  This is done usually in early February.

Please note these are competitive awards.  The Awards Committee of the Graduate Council will review packets sometime during the middle of March.  Each department/program submitting a nomination will be notified the following week.

The following fields of study are selected from the Doctoral Recipients from United States Universities, produced by the National Opinion Research Center (2000) and Science and Engineering Doctorate Awards, produced by the National Science Foundation (1999).  Only those fields where women are graduated at or less than 25 percent of the male graduates qualify for the UW Women Graduate Assistantship Pool.
