Animal Science
Hi,
I’m Lea Rempel and I’m a graduate student here in the department
of Animal Sciences. I am majoring in reproductive physiology.
I was first attracted to the University of Wyoming while I was working
on my master’s degree at South Dakota State University also in animal
science reproductive biology. I decided that I enjoyed doing the research
so much and I was compelled by it that I wanted to continue. I knew that
the University of Wyoming had an exceptional research facility program
in the animal science department. I then contacted Dr. Thomas Hansen and
was able to enter into his program working in early pregnancy in cattle.
We have also ventured off and we’re doing some work with early pregnancy
and pregnancy throughout in mice. We’ve been able to identify some
uterine proteins that are expressed during pregnancy. It has been very
educational and beneficial and I know it will help advance my career moves.
I enjoy attending classes here at the University of Wyoming because it
is nice that they are smaller, it is more personal, yet we still receive
a wide range of technology and we also have very good instructors that
present current data. They go out of their way to make sure everyone understands
and I’ve never had a point where I was not able to actually attend
a class or take a class because it was canceled due to low enrollment
numbers or whatnot. I really think the University of Wyoming strives to
make sure that the educational opportunities are there for their students
and that we can have main access to things that are going to help us in
our future goals.
I’ve had several opportunities as far as research is concerned.
Dr. Hansen has a very productive laboratory that he runs and we’ve
always been able to utilize those facilities and collaborate with other
researchers within the department of the university itself and also with
collaborators outside the university to help advance our experiments and
our research projects. And from those research projects we’ve also
been able to attend several meetings and present our data. I have had
an opportunity to attend the Society for the Study of Reproduction meetings
for two years now and previously we went to another set of scientific
meetings. I was able to attend last year and compete in an international
competition and with the help and guidance of Dr. Hansen I was able to
take first place in that and that brings quite a bit of recognition to
the abilities and the facilities that are available here at the University
of Wyoming for good research.
