Soil and water testing workshops Sept. 3 in Cody and Powell

Soil and water testing workshops sponsored by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) are Wednesday, Sept. 3, in Cody and Powell.

The Cody workshop begins at 1 p.m. in the EOC room in the basement of the Park County Courthouse, and the Powell workshop starts at 7 p.m. in the extension meeting room at the Park County Fairgrounds.

Participants will learn the importance of taking soil and water tests on their properties, how to take samples, what the tests include and how to interpret results.

“Soil test results can save you money and time,” said Sandra Frost, UW CES area educator for crops. “You save money when you apply only the amount of fertilizer and soil nutrients the soil needs, and you save time when crops or ornamental plants successfully establish themselves and you do not have to reseed or replant.”

Frost said soil fertility changes throughout the year, and because of that a soil test is a good investment.

Water testing is also important because water quality can fluctuate during the year, she said.

“In some areas, testing more than once a year may be advisable,” Frost said. “A water test will not only indicate if the water is drinkable but also whether or not it is safe to use on your landscaping.”
