Sheridan small-acreage workshop topics include pruning, low-water landscapes
Pruning, low-water landscapes, septic system planning and subdivision developments and water rights are topics at the small-acreage workshop Saturday, March 8, in Sheridan.
The workshop, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., which includes lunch, is at the Joe and Arlene Watt Agriculture Center at Sheridan College.
Topics for this year were decided from surveys taken after a small-acreage workshop last year. “We expect attendance to be around 50; last year we had 45,” said Adrienne Tatman, a researcher at the University of Wyoming Sheridan Research and Extension Center (SREC).
“Septic system planning is a very important subject to people who live out of town,” she said. SREC personnel have also received calls from landowners to prune vegetation. Tatman said the workshop should help teach correct pruning techniques.
“Many people are interested in using low-water landscape techniques because of our limited rainfall,” said Tatman. “Some people have moved here from places with more rainfall, and this topic will educate them on successful plant varieties and requirements for this area.”
Subdivisions and water rights have become important because of large land parcels being divided, she said. “As with the other topics, some landowners haven’t lived in Wyoming, so the laws regarding water are new to them, and we will try to cover some of the main issues.”
The workshop is sponsored by SREC, the Nonpoint Source Task Force (Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality), the Sheridan County Conservation District and Barnyards & Backyards, a magazine produced by the UW Cooperative Extension Service for small-acreage owners.
Registration is requested by March 4 by calling (307) 737-2415, or (307) 672-5820, ext. 3.
