Range monitoring workshop June 23 near Lander

Ranchers, landowners, range managers and others are invited to participate in a range monitoring workshop Monday, June 23, near Lander.

Attendees will learn range monitoring techniques, learn how to identify grasses, forbs and shrubs, and tour riparian and upland sites in the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Atlantic City Common Allotment.

“We’ll be teaching range monitoring methods that are simple and easy to learn yet are still scientifically valid and approved by federal land management agencies,” said one of the instructors, Barton Stam, an educator with the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES).

The UW CES and BLM Lander Field Office are workshop sponsors.

“Folks will learn how to set up and conduct range monitoring on their private property or public grazing allotments they lease,” Stam said.

Other instructors are UW CES educator Ron Cunningham, UW CES range management specialists Mike Smith and Rachel Mealor, and BLM Lander Field Office Rangeland Management Specialist Scott Fluer.

“If you want to learn to identify plants and methods used to monitor rangeland conditions, this is a workshop to attend,” Fluer said.

Participants should meet at the Atlantic City Mercantile in Atlantic City south of Lander at 10 a.m. They are asked to bring their own lunch and drinking water, and they should wear footwear and clothing appropriate for extreme changes in weather. The workshop is free.
