UW extension sponsors radon information meetings for public, professionals

The what, when, where and why of radon is being offered by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) at free sessions to the general public, realtors and contractors this month.

Set during Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month, the sessions are in Lander, Riverton, Thermopolis, Wheatland and Worland. Steve Melia, radon and lead program manager with the Wyoming State Department of Health, will present the programs.

Approximately one-third of all homes in Wyoming have radon levels above the Environmental Protection Agency’s action level, according to its Web site. The site states there is no safe level of radon.

There are separate sessions for the public and realtors and contractors. Continuing education credits will be provided realtors for a charge of $25 for the four-hour class.

The public sessions are 1½-hours long and are for those who want to know more about radon in Wyoming and how to build or make their homes safe from radon.

Public sessions are:

• Worland, 6:30-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, Extension Learning Center, 116 South 11th St.;
• Thermopolis, 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Big Horn Federal meeting room, 643 Broadway;
• Lander, 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the County Commissioners Room, 450 N. 2nd; and
• Wheatland, 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at the First State Bank Conference Room, 1405 16th St. 

Sessions for realtors and contractors are:

• Worland, 1-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at the Extension Learning Center, 116 South 11th St.;
•  Riverton, 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the High Plains Power Conference Room, 230 W. Main; and
• Wheatland, 1-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at First State Bank Conference Center, 1405 16th  St.
