Field day at Powell UW research center also includes opportunity to earn cash
Producers attending field day Thursday, July 9, at the University of Wyoming’s Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC) can learn about the newest pertinent crop research but also could earn a few bucks if they participate in a computerized market game session.
Strip tillage in sugar beets, weed control and nitrogen fertility in Roundup Ready sugar beets, grass seed establishment and new herbicides for weed control in small grain are part of the research trials the public can tour and discuss during the day, said Abdel Mesbah, director of PREC.
“This year, there are more than 50 trials being conducted here at the center,” he said. “Since we won’t be able to cover all of them in the morning, the afternoon will be reserved for individuals or small groups interested in touring specific trials or plots.”
Lunch is provided following the morning tours. To aid in meal planning, please RSVP by e-mail at kparsons@uwyo.edu or by calling (307) 754-2223. Please include your name and number attending.
Coffee and doughnuts are offered at 8 a.m. along with registration for the computer market games in the afternoon. At 9 a.m., Mesbah will join Stephen D. Miller, associate dean in the UW College of Agriculture and director of the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), in a welcome. AES oversees the research and extension centers in Powell, Sheridan, near Lingle and in Laramie.
Anyone involved in production agriculture and comfortable using a mouse and clicking a button on a computer is invited to register to participate in the computerized market game session. The sessions are part of a study to learn about market behavior being conducted by the College of Agriculture’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.
Eight people are needed for two sessions in the afternoon: 1-3 p.m., and 3:30-5:30 p.m. Participants can earn from $70 to $100. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information about the project, contact Professor Dale Menkhaus at (307) 766-5128 or menkhaus@uwyo.edu, or Assistant Professor Chris Bastian at (307) 766-4377 or bastian@uwyo.edu.
In addition to the field day activities at Powell, a UW alumni, friends and faculty gathering is 6-8 p.m. at The Terrace in Cody. Those planning to attend should contact Carolyn Herman at (307) 766-3372 or at agdevel@uwyo.edu.
