New UW bulletin describes best Easter lily care

Making an Easter lily bloom at just the right time begins more than six months before Palm Sunday, according to a new publication from the University of Wyoming Cooperative Service (UW CES).

Bulbs are dug at that time and shipped to individual growers who have to cool the bulbs for more than 1,000 hours at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Karen Panter, UW CES horticulturist.

Easter lilies must be in peak condition by Palm Sunday, and, since the date of Easter Sunday can vary as much as five weeks year to year, greenhouse crop producers face challenges, said Panter.

Panter also describes how to best care for lilies once in a home and, if planted outdoors, how to bring them in to survive Wyoming’s winter.
