UW research station co-hosts grape growing conference at Sheridan College
 
Those attending a grape workshop in Sheridan Saturday, May 19, may someday taste the fruits of their labors.

Workshops for growing grapes in southeast and northwest Wyoming and southern Montana will be followed by planting a 75-vine cold hardy grape research vineyard at Sheridan College as a joint project between the University of Wyoming Sheridan Research and Extension (R&E) Center and the Sheridan College horticulture program.

The workshops, at the Joe and Arlene Watt Agriculture Center on the Sheridan College campus,  begin at 9 a.m. and conclude with the field planting session from 1-2 p.m. Lunch is provided.

The schedule includes:

9:15-10 a.m. – Growing grapes in southeast Wyoming. Patrick Zimmerer of Table Mountain Vineyards of Huntley will speak about his vineyard and winery and provide some of his wines for tasting.

10-11:15 a.m. – Growing grapes in Powell and Colstrip, Mont. Phil Napoli of Powell and Carl Camper of Colstrip are growers and hobbyists and bring practical field experience growing cold hardy grapes.

11:15-noon – Cold hardy grape research at UW. Rik Smith, assistant professor of agroecology in the Department of Renewable Resources at the College of Agriculture, will discuss proposed cold hardy grape research.

Noon-1 p.m. – Lunch.

1-2 p.m. – Field session. Vineyard planting. Those planning to participate in planting should come prepared with gloves, outdoor work attire, and sunscreen.
RSVP for lunch is requested by calling the Sheridan R&E Center at (307) 737-2415. The $10 registration fee, which includes lunch, is payable at the door the day of the workshops.
