September 8, 2009UW hosts food issues conference Sept. 24-25
A conference this month at the University of Wyoming is for anyone interested in the many issues surrounding food.
The theme of the 2009 Consumer Issues Conference is “Food Safety, Security and Sources: A Recipe for Tough Times.” It is Sept. 24-25 in the Wyoming Union.
Sessions are from 8:45 a.m. through lunch. Tours are in the afternoons. Thursday’s tour will be of Grant Family Farms – a community supported agriculture farm north of Fort Collins, Colo. Friday’s tour will be of the UW Meat Lab, the UW ACRES (Agricultural Community Resources for Everyday Sustainability) Student Farm, Big Hollow Food Co-op and the Laramie Farmers’ Market.
The conference features nationally known and local speakers on issues such as local food, food labels, healthy eating, food safety law, community supported agriculture, health/food fraud issues and more.
The movie Food, Inc. will be shown for free and open to the public Thursday, Sept. 24, in the College of Agriculture Auditorium.
Early registration, which ends Thursday, Sept. 10, for the full conference (including meals and tours) is $60. One-day registrations are also available. The annual event is planned by a partnership between the College of Agriculture and the UW College of Law.
