UW workshop offers prairie dog and cheatgrass control, drought-tolerant landscaping information

A small-acreage team of seven organizations is sponsoring a Casper workshop on prairie dog and cheatgrass control and drought-tolerant landscaping Tuesday, July 17.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., introductions are at 6 p.m. and workshops are 6:15-9 p.m. at the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) Agricultural Resource and Learning Center, 2011 Fairgrounds Road.

Brian Connely, education coordinator with the Natrona County Weed and Pest Control District, will present “Prairie Dog Management, a Cooperative Approach,” and “Cheatgrass Explosion.”

Connely will be joined in the prairie dog presentation by Larry Bentley of the Natrona County Prairie Dog CRM (coordinated resource management). Presented will be control tools and techniques, an introduction to a county-wide effort of management, and the need for cooperation by landowners for success.

Connely’s cheatgrass (downy brome) presentation offers an approach combining range management and herbicide application to control the invasive grass.

Tom Heald, UW CES small acreage/horticulture educator, discusses varieties of native and adapted plants suitable for Wyoming’s climate and alkaline soils in “What If We Had a Drought and Our Garden Plants Didn’t Know It?”

The workshop is free. Funding is provided by the Small Acreage Issue Team, a multi-agency group that provides sustainable resource management information to small-acreage landowners in Wyoming. Members are the UW CES, Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Historic Trails Resource and Development Council, Wyoming Association of Conservation Districts, Wyoming State Forestry Division, Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Wyoming Audubon.
