UW short course promotes understanding of Park County climate, soils, plants

A three-part short course about Wyoming climate, soils and vegetation will be offered in Cody and Powell in January by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES).

“The goals of the short course are to provide information about climate, soils and plants, and to promote understanding of the challenges of desert living in Park County,” said Sandra Frost, UW CES crop systems educator for Big Horn, Hot Springs, Park and Washakie counties. “Information from the short course will assist landowners in planning development of their acreage.”

All Powell sessions are at 6:30 p.m. in the extension meeting room at the Park County Fairgrounds. Cody sessions vary in location.

The first session, “Wyoming Climate,” is 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, in the EOC room of the Park County Courthouse in Cody and at 6:30 p.m. in Powell. Frost will discuss the climate of northwest Wyoming and how it affects landscapes.

The second session, “Soils,” is 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in the Barling room of the Park County Courthouse and at 6:30 p.m. in Powell. The program is an introduction to the characteristics of western soils and the soils of Park County.

The third part, “Plants,” is 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in the Barling room of the Park County and at 6:30 p.m. in Powell. The program includes the adaptations of plants for survival in arid climates and suggestions for what will survive in Park County.

To register, contact the Park County UW CES office at (307) 754-8836. A registration fee of $20 is payable at the first session. For individual classes, the fee is $10.
