UW Sheridan research center offers internships to high school juniors, seniors
High school juniors and seniors across the region can apply for paid internships at the Sheridan Research and Extension Center (SREC).
The 12-week internships next summer will allow students interested in math and science to conduct research with faculty members and graduate students from the University of Wyoming, Sheridan College or Little Big Horn College of the Crow Indian Reservation in southern Montana, says Justin Moss, SREC director.
The application deadline is March 1, 2008. Applications will be posted at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/uwexpstn/Sheridan.asp.
Funding is through a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service Secondary Agriculture Education Challenge Grants program. Total funding is $96,352 with $48,176 from the USDA and $48,176 matching from Sheridan College and UW. Funding is for two years.
The center could hire up to 10 students with pay ranging from $10 to $12 per hour. Moss said students from Wyoming, southern Montana and western South Dakota will be sought.
Out-of-Sheridan-area students can stay in Sheridan College dorms at $60 per week. Work-related transportation will be provided by SREC to those without a vehicle, said Moss. Research would be conducted at SREC, which is about 7 miles east of Sheridan.
Students could continue their interest in agriculture programs at Sheridan College and/or UW.
“This is going to give them insight and knowledge into how a university works, what research is all about, why it’s important and what they can do to answer questions,” said Moss. “There is such a wide range of opportunity in the UW College of Agriculture, from family and consumer sciences to microbiology and plant sciences to entomology.”
In addition, Moss said packets will be made available to high school guidance counselors. He will also ask teachers for permission to visit classrooms to explain the program.
