Weston County 4-H’er wins $5,000 NRA scholarship

Sharpshooting has earned a Weston County 4-H’er the 2007 National Rifle Association (NRA) Outstanding Achievement Youth Award scholarship.

Juliann Terry of Newcastle received a $5,000 scholarship, an expense-paid trip to the awards banquet in Washington, D.C., and a certificate and plaque presented by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. The presentation was Sept. 13-16.

“To me, it’s no surprise she won,” said Warren Crawford, state 4-H youth development specialist. “She’s excelled in the shooting sports area in Wyoming for years. She’s participated in the Raton, New Mexico, trip for state shooting winners and also represented Wyoming at the national shooting sports invitation in Rapid City, S.D., in 2006 and 2007.”

4-H is the youth arm of the University of Wyoming’s Cooperative Extension Service, and its state offices are in the College of Agriculture.

Terry, the daughter of Dick and Bernie Terry, is a member of the Borderline Bandits 4-H Club and attends Newcastle High School.

The scholarship recognizes NRA Junior members who actively participate in their community and shooting sports and who excel in education. Terry, who has a 4.0 GPA, wrote a required 1,000-word essay on “What Shooting Sports has Taught Me” as part of the competition.
