2008 Meats Judging Team
2008 Horse Judging TeamWyoming 4-Hers win honors at Denver Western National Roundup
Wyoming 4-H teams and members earned top 10 finishes at the 4-H Western National Roundup in Denver Jan. 9-13.
The Wyoming 4-H Meat’s Evaluation team finished third. Members were Thomas Osborne, Mary Osborne and Walter Crofts, all of Riverton, and Brent Horton of Pavillion. Thomas Osborne was sixth overall individual, and Crofts was ninth overall. The team was coached by Ron Cunningham, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) area educator based in Riverton, and 4-H leaders Amanda Winchester of Lander and Charlie Griffin of Riverton.
Colorado won the event and Texas placed second.
Emily Madden of Torrington, a member of the public speaking team, placed third in impromptu speaking while Erin Kelly of Natrona County placed fourth in prepared speaking. Both contestants were chosen to represent Wyoming by their performance at the Wyoming State 4-H speaking contest in Douglas, said coach Warren Crawford. “Each participating state can only send one representative to compete in the national contest so the quality of youth presenters is very high,” he said.
The horse judging team finished eighth in the National 4-H Horse Classic Western Division, said coach Milt Green, UW CES educator serving Converse, Natrona and Niobrara counties. Ruth Uptain of Casper placed eighth overall. Other team members were Keylee Sayler, Riley Arner and Sage Petersen, all of Casper.
“There were approximately 65 members participating, and she placed fourth in the halter category, fifth in oral reasons and eighth overall individual, which I think is exceptional,” said Green.
Colorado won the event and Idaho was second.
More than 800 youths from more than 30 states and Alberta, Canada, participated. The event coincides with the National Western Stock Show, Rodeo and Horse Show.
